For the first time in more than 30 years, snack foods sold in schools are getting a nutritional makeover. Under the USDA’s new “Smart Snacks in School” program, there will be limits on fat, salt, and sugar sold in vending machines, cafeterias, and snack bars. Doughnuts, candy bars, high-fat chips, and full-calorie soft drinks will no longer be allowed to be sold in school. Instead, snacks like granola bars, fruit cups, light popcorn, low-fat chips, and no-calorie flavored water will be offered.
